I will post some scenarios now.  This will require all of you to work together posting and replying to each other as if we were in class.  I think this will be fun.

Scenario 1. "During word processing class, Mr. Iliades notices Georgios typiing in  an IM window.  As his teacher comes near his station, Georgios hides the IM window, knowing that Mr. Iliades does not allow the use of IM during class.  Mr. Iliades asks Georgos to clse the IM window and see him after class.  After class, Mr. Iliades asks Georgios why he was sending instant messages during class.  Georgios responds that he was already done with his assignment and that he was bored."

1) Was Georgios using technology inappropriately?
2) What actions make the scenario appropriate or inappropriate?
3) What could or should Georgios have done differently?

How many of you are guilty of this?
Now that you worked through this exercise, will you think twice about using technology inappropriately?
How many of you IM while your parents are speaking with you?

  1. I think that Georgios used the technology inappropriately because class is no place for socialization. I believe Georgios could have simply picked up a book and read instead. Whatever his friend was saying is probably not as exciting as the book, and the fact that he has to hide it is another reason to not use it. You shouldn't be ashamed of who you are and what you do, and if you do the right thing, these things wouldn't affect you at all. I am personally not guilty of this but I will think next time technology comes up in school, at home or really anywhere. And if I am on the computer with a friend and my parents are trying to speak to me, I either ask mt friend to wait or I pause the video chat. I never like to ignore them as I am typing "lol, jk!" to my friend because I feel I owe my parents that respect.

  2. Dear Effie: You are so right. If you were the teacher, what would you have done? Could this have been solved earlier with a more proper lesson on the use of technology during school? Should the teacher have had something planned for early finishers?

What consequences should follow now for Georgios?

I liked what you said about giving your parents the respect they deserve. That is really nice.

  3. What Georgios did was wrong. Instead of IMing he could have read a book, like Effie said, or do homework for another class. School was not meant to socialize with friends online, you could do that after school. If I were his teacher, I would give him detention.

  4. Wouldn't you think that if you have to hide something or feel that you have to sneek something in behind the teacher's back, it would be wrong? Isn't that just common sense?

WHy would anybody want to take such a chance to get caught?

    Can you answer that question?

We all agree that Georgios should have either rechecked his work or at least open a book and read. Yet he chose to break the rules.
