George and his friend, Maria, both have camera phones.  George sits in the back of the class and uses his phone to photograph the test for Maria, who is taking the etst that afternoon.  George then emails the photgraph of the test to Maria's phone.

1) Are the two individuals using technology appropriately or inappropriately?
2) What actions make the scenario appropriate or inappropriate?
3) What could or should the two individuals have done differerntly?

Have you done this or know of someone who has done this?

If you were George & Maria's parents, what would you do?  Remember, this is CHEATING!

  1. This is totally inappropriate! George should have never pulled out his phone in the first place, taken the picture and then send it to Maria. i believe that George and Maria should have probably studied last night instead of texting each other or whatever they were doing. If I were their parents I would take their phones and make sure they get all their grades up. Only maybe after 3 months may I consider giving them the phone back, just maybe.

  2. Dear Effie: Would you call this cheating? Do you know anybody who has ever done this in school? Maria should have studied in this scenario like you suggested.

Where do you believe this type of "lesson" should be taught? Do you believe it starts at home? In school? Or both?

  3. What George and Maria did was both wrong. What they did was completely inapropriate. What they should have done was help each other study the night before. Maria never should have asked George for the answers, but George never should have agreed. If I were their parents, I'd take their phones away, and only give it to them on the weekends.

  4. What these two students did was very inapropriate. If Maria needed a good grade, instead of asking George to send her answers, she should have asked George to help her study. Maria is at fault, but George was just as wrong. He shouldn't have agreed to doing that for her. If I were their parents, I would do the same thing Theo said, I would only give them their phones on the weekends.

  5. Gone are the days where a cell phone was just a phone. Moreover, when a cell phone was just to stay in contact with famly/friends if you were late or lost.

Now, they are mini-computers that can do all sorts of tasks. GPS, radio, camera, video, daily planner, etc. The moment you purchase them, they are obselete.

The temptation to do wrong is great. This is one of the valid arguments to keep cell phones out of schools. WHen we were growing up, we never had these things. If our parents needed us, they simply called the office and we were paged or someone came for us.
Times have changed. Rules and regulations need to be changed to deal with these new types of violations. While cheating is cheating, these technologies need to have rules and reulations as well as proper instruction to their proper use, especially in schools.

    Thank you.
