Hello all.  How are you all doing?  Easter is quickly approaching.  We are going to switch gears now on this blog.  My project for Saint Joseph College now requires "Teaching" Digital Citizenship.  I need your help with this as well.

Today we are surrounded by all sorts of technological gadgets such as cell phones, iPads, iMacs, iPods, laptops, desktops, internet, tablets, etc.  The list and their uses grows by the day.

What is digital citizenship?  Who knows what this means?

Have you ever thought about the ethical use of these technologies?

Have you ever thought about the cost of technology to Americans?  I do not mean only how much they cost; but rather, the cost to society?

Plesase think about these questions and answer them to the best of your abilities.  This will help you with the next postings.

Thank you.

  1. Dear Theio Mike,
Actually I believe that technology in general has dictated our lives, more for my generation I believe. For example, in school today we had to hand in our essays for social studies and my teacher ripped up a paper because she read it over and realized that it was used in text language format. The girl that wrote up the paper didn't even realize that she was writing like that!! Also another example is Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr ect. Kids in today's society are having that constant urge or obsession to go on all the time, even if something like Twitter is pointless. Such as people in my school would post, "I am getting some fresh air and walking my dog" but how are you getting some fresh air and enjoying nature if your face is still glued to the screen on your phone? I think that people in everyday life are not only spending and losing so much money on technology but it also costs them their social skills, which is the saddest thing for me to see. I think using technology takes away from our humanity and replaces it with something that is so addicting and it could as well come between church. If we have technology we could always use it as a reason to avoid church. "I didn't go to church last Sunday because that girl was talking bad about me again and I wanted to see what she was posting" These are not good excuses because most people believe that technology will be the antichrist in this world today. And it might be if we allow it to exceed that far, but I know that I won't let that be the case for me because I appreciate a good face to face conversation way better then skype or ooVoo. I think that people in everyday life are not only spending and losing so much money on technology but it also costs them their social skills.

  2. Dear Effie: I loved that you mentioned the Antichrist. The Antichrist will USE the technology that is already established to carry out his rule of evil. It is not the devil's creation, but rather, he will use it for his benefit to control the lives of all people. People will not be able to buy or sell unless they have the mark of the beast on their body somewhere. It is truly scarey and we cannot stop this technology now.

What does DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP mean to you?

Where should this concept be taught? Should it be taught in school, home, or both?

Do you think this is why so many students talk during class because they have so much built up energy because they do not go outside and burn those calories and speak to friends?

Let's start with this for now.
